Followers of different islamic sects have been living in the region side by side for hundreds of years as have been different sects of jews and christians in the same area and elsewhere. Geography of the area might have changed after the WWI but Iran and Turkey have been in the region without any conflict since the time of safavid dynasty and other than petty quarrels, there has been no sectarian war. The sectarian problems have started especially after invasion of Iraq by western troops with leadership of USA. Presence of Russia in the region has been augmented because of the push by US government through proxy groups to destabilize the countries in the region which had invested their trust in American politics.
